Lobo VB Earns AVCA Team Academic Award

by Connor Gilbert

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—The University of New Mexico volleyball program has earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the fifth consecutive season, as well as earning the additional Honor Roll distinction representing the top 20 percent of qualified teams’ GPAs in the division for the third consecutive season.

UNM was one of just 52 schools — and one of two in the Mountain West — to earn the Honor Roll recognition.

The award, first awarded in the 1992–93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale.

As a team, the Lobos finished with a 3.69 GPA as a team over the last semester and a 3.71 in the fall — this past spring semester marked the 10th consecutive semester with a 3.4 or better and the 26th in a row with a 3.0 or better.

It’s the ninth time in the last decade that the Lobos have received the team academic award as well as the fifth time under Newman-Gonchar, who is entering his sixth season at the helm in 2024.
