ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Vicky Maes, the reigning Mountain West Coach of the Year, has announced that Rebekkah Gaines of Florida A&M University has transferred to UNM and will play for the Lobos in the fall.  Gaines, who is originally from Kearnsville, North Carolina, will be a junior in 2024-25.

Gaines was heavily decorated for the Rattlers as she led the team to the 2023 SWAC Tournament championship and a berth in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, and a 2024 regular season shared title.  She twice in 2024 was named the SWAC Player of the week, and she was named First Team All-SWAC at No. 1 singles in both 2023 and 2024.

She also was a member of the 2023 and 2024 All-SWAC Tournament Team.  She also brings with her 37 collegiate victories to the Lobos.

Said Maes of Gaines, “I am thrilled to add Rebekkah to our squad. She is a very seasoned competitor and I expect she will do extremely well in the Mountain West. She has already accomplished so much in college and her experience will be invaluable to our program.

“I chose UNM because from the moment I stepped on campus I felt welcomed and I instantly clicked with the entire coaching staff and the girls on the team. I also loved the facilities and the support the community gives to the tennis team and all of UNM Athletics. I am excited to play in the West as well as looking forward to the competitive play in and out of conference,” said Gaines.
