Lobo Men’s & Women’s Golf to Compete in Inaugural NB3 Matchplay
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –– The New Mexico men’s and women’s golf team will compete this October in the debut of the NB3 Matchplay at Twin Warriors. The tournament, hosted by Notah Begay III and the Pueblo of Santa Ana, will be held Oct. 8-9 and consist of four schools competing in the newest event of Golf Channel’s fall collegiate golf schedule. The setting of scenic Twin Warriors Golf Club, just north of Albuquerque, and the backdrop of the International Balloon Fiesta will showcase New Mexico to a national television audience.
The field for the inaugural event consists of the men’s and women’s teams from New Mexico, New Mexico State, Stanford and Texas. The men’s field includes three teams that advanced to the 2024 NCAA Championships in New Mexico, Stanford and Texas, while the women’s field is headlined by 2024 NCAA Champion Stanford.
“This will be the largest and most prestigious golf event to be contested in New Mexico since UNM hosted the NCAA championships,” said Begay. “The support of Pueblo of Santa Ana and its enterprises provides a unique opportunity to showcase the scenery and culture of New Mexico. Everything that I love about my state will now be on full display to the entire nation! A truly unique and exciting opportunity.”
Over the two days, the teams will compete in a round robin match play format in which each team plays the other three teams. A total of five points will be available in each match and the winners on both the men’s and women’s sides will be determined by total points won. In addition, an overall University champion will also be determined by the cumulative total of both the men’s and women’s points. There will be plenty of intense action in every match where a single point could make the difference.
Golf Channel will broadcast the event live on both days, with coverage also available on Peacock. Fans around the nation can watch from 5:30-8:30 pm ET (3:30-6:30 pm MT) on Oct. 8 and from 4:30-7:30 pm ET (2:30-5:30 pm MT) on Oct. 9.
“We are honored to play in the inaugural NB3 Matchplay event,” said UNM men’s head coach Jake Harrington. “It is a tremendous opportunity for our program to play on national television and we are excited for this challenge. We get to welcome some of the nation’s most storied programs to New Mexico and compete against them on one of the best courses in our state. We are thankful that Notah has created this event to bring a national spotlight to New Mexico.”
“This tournament is incredible and we are thankful for Notah and Twin Warriors for their work in making this a reality,” said UNM women’s head coach Jill Trujillo. “As a native New Mexican, I am so excited for this opportunity to have our state showcased to a national audience. We have the national champions coming to play in New Mexico and our team is excited to play against the best of the best. It will be an amazing event for all to see!”
Admission is free and there will be an autograph area for high school and junior golfers to meet some of the finest collegiate golfers in the country.
