Alex Maggs Named Second Team CSC Academic All-America
AUSTIN, Texas — The College Sports Communicators has announced the 2023 Men’s Tennis Academic All-America team, and graduate student Alex Maggs is one of five repeat honorees, earning Second Team accolades for the second straight year. Last year Maggs was the first Lobo men’s tennis player in program history to be named CSC Academic All-America.”
“Alex has been terrific throughout his career on the court and in the classroom, and this honor really showcases that,” said head coach Chris Russell. “Alex is a leader in everything he does, and that’s why he was the perfect captain for this team. To earn this honor once is a tremendous accomplishment, but to do it in back-to-back seasons is truly outstanding.”
Overall, there were 19 student-athletes named to the three teams, with seven on the first team, seven on the second, and five on the third. 2023 was the first year of a men’s tennis specific CSC Academic All-America team. Previously from 1968 to 2023, men’s tennis players were selected onto an at-large team with student-athletes from several other sports.
In order to earn Academic All-America, a student-athletes must be a starter of important reserve on a team and have a grade point average of at least 3.50. Maggs, who was also named All-Mountain West for a second striaght year, went 16-10 in singles for UNM including 9-4 at No. 6 singles. He also was named All-MW in doubles, going 11-11 including 10-7 at No. 1 doubles.
Maggs joins Jaelen House of men’s basketball as 2023-24 Academic All-Americans. Aside for the two seasons that were affected by COVID, the Lobos have had at least two CSC Academic All-Americans in every year going back to the 2000-01 academic year.
