Five Lobos Named to CSC Academic All-District® Baseball Team
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— New Mexico Baseball landed five selections on College Sports Communicators’ Academic All-District Team on Tuesday, with Jake Holland, Will Asby, Brett Russell, Arthur Steinkamp and Dayne Pengelly were all honored for their performance on both the diamond and in the classroom.
For Steinkamp, it’s the second Academic All-District honors in as many years – it’s the first such award for Holland, Asby, Russell and Pengelly. Holland was selected to advance to the national ballot for potential Academic All-American status, to be voted on by CSC members – the full list of selections for first-, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced July 2.
Holland shared MW Co-Player of the Year honors with Air Force’s Jay Thomason after posting the second-best batting average in the conference (.385) overall with a .417 average in conference games, leading the league in slugging (.801) and ranking second in RBI (59) and HR (16) to lead a Lobo lineup that finished the regular season as the MW statistical leaders in batting average, slugging, on base percentage, runs, hits, RBI, total bases and walks. He touts a 4.135 weighted GPA over his two years in Albuquerque, with a 4.061 over the last semester.
Asby tied with Holland for the second-most RBI in the league (59) and broke a UNM single-season record with four grand slams this year on 12 homers, also matching Holland with 13 multi-RBI games. In his first year at UNM, the grad transfer by way of San Francisco also finished with 19 multi-hit games and enters the MW Tournament on a 16-game on-base streak. He finished the regular season ranked among the Top 10 in the MW in six statistical categories – slugging (No. 7, .617), runs (No. 2, 59), hits (No. 7, 70), RBI (No. 2, 59), total bases (No. 6, 127) and sac flies (No. 5, 6). He posted a 3.63 GPA in his one year as a grad transfer at UNM, graduating with a degree in Liberal Arts.
Steinkamp compiled a 4-1 record in 24 relief appearances in 2024, totaling a career-high 45 innings of work. The fifth-year lefty carries a 3.97 cumulative GPA and posted a weighted 4.08 GPA over his final semester as a Lobo, graduating with a Masters in Business Administration.
Russell carries a 3.76 cumulative GPA over his three years at UNM and a 3.69 over the last semester in his final season as a Lobo – he’ll be graduating with a bachelor’s in biochemistry with a minor in psychology after completing his coursework in the fall. The senior righty started eight games with 16 appearances in 2024, posting a career-best 5.87 GPA and picking up MW Pitcher of the Week honors. He struck out 45 over 61 ⅓ innings of work, going six or more innings in four of his final six appearances – all starts.
In his first year at UNM by way of Pima CC, Pengelly touts a weighted 4.10 GPA while majoring in engineering. Pengelly also earned MW Pitcher of the Week honors in 24, starting in 11 of 13 appearances for a total of 50 innings on the mound. His 12 strikeouts over seven scoreless innings against Nevada on May 10 were the most since Will Armbruester in 2021.
