by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico travels to California this week for the 2024 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. The event will begin Friday at the 7,538-yard, par-72 North Course of the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad.

The Lobos advanced to the NCAA Championship by finishing fifth at last week’s West Lafayette Regional in Indiana. The 30-team field, the five top finishers at each of the six regionals, will play the first three rounds of the event Friday-Sunday. The top 15 teams will make the cut and play the final round of stroke play on Monday. The top eight teams from stroke play will advance to match play, which will crown the national champion. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be Tuesday and the final on Wednesday. Golf Channel will televise the action live for the final three days (Monday-Wednesday) and there will be live scoring throughout the week on GolfStat.com.

The Lobos are making their 44th NCAA Championship appearance, as they return to the event for the second straight year. Last year, UNM returned to the tournament for the first time in six years and tied for 25th place. New Mexico has 11 top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championship, highlighted by a T-4th finish in 1973. Under the current format, New Mexico has made match play once at the NCAA Championship, finishing 6th in stroke play in 2013 before falling to eventual champion Alabama in the match play quarterfinals. Tommy Armour III owns the best NCAA individual finish by a Lobo, earning a T-5th mark at the 1981 Championship at Stanford.

New Mexico’s lineup for the event is Bastien Amat, Albert Boneta, Matthew Watkins, Carson Herron and Connor Adams. Oliver Cage is the alternate in the lineup.

The Lobos enter the NCAA Championship ranked No. 23 nationally by Golfstat. New Mexico has posted seven top-three finishes in 13 events this season, highlighted by two victories, having won the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in the fall and the NIT to open the spring schedule.
