WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team continued play Tuesday at the 2024 NCAA West Lafayette Regional with the second round at the Kampen-Cosler Course of the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. The Lobos shot 5-under during the second round to move up one spot to fourth place at 3-under after 36 holes of the event.

The top five teams at the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships. Top-seeded Vanderbilt continues to lead the tournament with a score of 16-under through 36 holes. Host Purdue is second at 15-under, while Arizona is third at 9-under. New Mexico is in fourth at 3-under, one shot ahead of Florida, who is fifth at 2-under. Mississippi State is sixth at 2-over, putting the Lobos five shots ahead of the cut line as they head into the final round.

Matthew Watkins shined during the second round, shooting a 5-under 67, to move into the individual top 15 at 1-under for the tournament. His round included six birdies and an eagle on the par-5 6th. Bastien Amat is also T-13th individually at 1-under after shooting an even par 72 on Tuesday. Carson Herron shot a 1-under 71 and Connor Adams added a 1-over 73 during the second round for the Lobos. Albert Boneta rounded out the UNM lineup with a 75 on Tuesday.

“It was a good round, even though it was a struggle a little bit in the middle,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “Watkins came through with a 5-under for us and that really propelled the team. There was a lot of solid play. We are excited about the round and it put us in good position as we head into tomorrow.”

The NCAA West Lafayette Regional concludes Wednesday at the Kampen-Cosler Course.
