Lobos in Fifth After Opening Day of NCAA West Lafayette Regional
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team opened play Monday at the 2024 NCAA West Lafayette Regional with the first round at the Kampen Course of the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. The Lobos shot 2-over during the opening 18 holes to hold fifth place after the first day of the event.
The top five teams at the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships. Top-seeded Vanderbilt holds the opening round lead at 11-under, followed by Arizona at 5-under and host Purdue at 4-under. Florida is fourth at 1-over, while the Lobos are in fifth at 2-over, seven shots ahead of sixth place Mississippi State and Colorado State.
Albert Boneta and Bastien Amat led the Lobos during the opening round, each shooting a 1-under 71 on Monday. Connor Adams, making his NCAA Championship debut, shot an even par 72. Matthew Watkins posted a 76 and Carson Herron rounded out the lineup with a 79.
“It was a struggle out there at times, but the guys played great,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “We could have made some more putts, but they guys were solid and we are right where we need to be. Bastien had a great ball striking day and Albert had a great two-putt to end his round. With the weather coming in tomorrow, you don’t know what is going to happen, so to be in that top five is important.”
The NCAA West Lafayette Regional continues Tuesday and concludes Wednesday at the Kampen Course.
