Jhang, Huang, Hoppe Named All-Mountain West
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Katherin Jhang and Hsuan Huang were named All-Mountain West in singles, and Jhang and Leonie Hoppe were named All-Mountain West in doubles as the league announced the 2024 award winners at the Mountain West Tournament Awards Banquet.
Jhang earned singles honors for the second straight season, making her the first since current assistant coach Yue Lin “Polly” Chen was named back-to-back in 2021 and 2022. Hsuan Huang’s honor was her first after earning doubles honors as a freshman in 2021. Jhang and Hoppe are the first UNM doubles team to earn All-Mountain West since Huang and Natasha Munday earned the honor is 2021.
Jhang is 16-10 on the year and 9-5 in the dual season, taking over the No. 1 duties. She earned several big clinching wins on the season including early in a 4-3 victory over San Jose State in which she trailed 4-1 in the third set. Huang also has several clinchers including in a 4-3 win over Wyoming that set UNM up for the regular season title. Huang overall is 17-7 in singles and 11-3 in the dual season. As a team, Jhang and Hoppe are a combined 17-6 this year and 14-3 in the spring season. Hoppe has 22 doubles wins and Jhang 21 and they play No. 1 doubles in the dual portion of the season.
New Mexico won its first outright Mountain West regular season title with a 4-0 win over Air Force. The Lobos earned a bye into the quarterfinals and will face either No. 8 seed San Jose State or No. 9 seed Boise State at 11 am Mountain Time on Thursday in Las Vegas.
