Lobos Take on Air Force Looking for History
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — It’s been all winding down and pointing to this. One day. One match. One chance to cement a legacy. The 2024 edition of the New Mexico Lobos, a team that over the last two years was 21-21, has a chance to clinch a share of the programs’ first regular season Mountain West title when New Mexico travels to Air Force to take on the homestanding Falcons at 11 am.
New Mexico and San Diego State are guaranteed the top two seeds in the conference tournament as both teams are 7-1 on the season. A win either way would give each team a share of the title, and UNM would be the No. 1 seed with a win and a San Diego State loss.
For New Mexico, the Lobos took four singles wins in its last outing, a 4-3 win over Wyoming. In that win, the Lobos lost the doubles point for a second striaght outing, but took singles wins in the lower four flights including a thrilling three set clincher by Hsuan Huang at No. 3 singles. Maud Vandeputte picked up her 20th singles win of the season, and Leonie Hoppe her 22nd.
The Lobos are also looking to move to 19-2 on the season, and that would equal the programs’ best 21-game start in school history. The 1997 team started out 22-2 on the way to a 22-4 record.
