Men's Tennis Shuts Out Nevada 4-0
RENO, Nev. — Well that turned out to be a little easier than expected. UNM took advantage of a severely shorthanded Nevada squad with just five available players, and UNM easily rolled to a 4-0 win to move to 11-7 on the season and 2-0 in the Mountain West.
New Mexico needed to win only one doubles match due to a forfeit at No. 3 doubles for Nevada, but it hardly mattered. Georgio Samaha and Nicolas Recoura won 6-2 at No. 1 moments before Alex Maggs and Arda Azkara could clinch their match, leading 5-2.
That made it 1-0, and a forfeit at No. 6 singles meant it was 2-0 UNM, needing just two more points. Aram Noroozian looked like his old self playing up at No. 2 with a 6-3, 6-2 win to make it 3-0, and Samaha ended it with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win.
Arda Azkara was leading at No. 1 singles 7-6 (7-3), 3-2, and Rafael Abdulsalam stayed hot, leading 6-3, 4-3. Both matches were abandoned.
UNM stays on the road to face San Diego State, coached by former Lobo Gene Carswell, on Monday at 11 am Mountain Time.
