Lobos Drop Game 2 to Spartans

by Allison Weiss

SAN JOSE, Calif.— The Lobos fell to San José State 4-1 on Saturday to even the series with the Spartans scoring one run in the first, adding two in the third and a final run in the fourth, while the Lobos scored their run in the fourth.

Trailing 3-0, UNM loaded the bases in the top of the fourth as Chloe Yeatts hit a one-out single to right, Gabrielle Briones reached on a fielding error by the third baseman and Hayden Luderer was hit a pitch all in consecutive at-bats. Katherine Brunner put the Lobos on the board with a sacrifice fly to left that allowed pinch runner Macie Andrews to tag up, Briones to advance to third and Luderer to move up to second to put the tying run in scoring position. However, a flyout to right ended the inning.

SJSU added one run in the bottom half of the inning on a bases-loaded walk before McKenna Guest got out of the inning with a grounder back to the circle, with Guest going home and Yeatts throwing to first for the inning-ending double play.

The Lobos were unable to get another runner on in the next three innings and Guest and the Lobo defense retired the side in order in the fifth and allowed one runner to reach, but not score, in the sixth for the final score.

Guest retired the side in order in the second and fifth with three scoreless innings, finishing with 6.0 innings pitched, three runs (two earned), five hits allowed, two strikeouts and a walk.

At the plate, UNM finished with three hits with Rachael Hathoot, DeNae Vasquez-Dickson and Brunner all recording one. With their hits, Hathoot extended her hit streak to nine games, while Vasquez-Dickson extended her streak of reaching base to four games.

UNM plays SJSU for the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT.
