Lobos Earn MW Newcomer, Defensive Player and Coach of the Year to Highlight All-Conference Awards

by Allison Weiss

LAS VEGAS, Nev.— The Lobo women’s basketball team picked up a handful of postseason MW awards, highlighted by MW Newcomer of the Year for Nyah Wilson, MW Defensive Player of the Year for Aniyah Augmon and MW Coach of the Year for Mike Bradbury.

The selections, made by the conference coaches, are the first career postseason accolades for all three Lobos.

Wilson is the seventh Lobo to earn Newcomer of the Year and the fourth under Bradbury, with the last one back in 2018-19. Augmon is only the second Lobo to win Defensive Player of the Year, joining Porche Torrance who won in 2011-12. The selection marks the first Coach of the Year award for Bradbury and the third for a New Mexico coach.

In addition, Augmon and Wilson were named to the All-Mountain West Team and Augmon was named to the All-Defensive Team. It marks the first all-conference selections for Augmon and Wilson.

Wilson took the Mountain West by storm, scoring in double figures in 17 games with seven games with 20-plus points and one 30-point game, averaging 17.7 points per game, shooting 46.0% and 40.0% from three-point range. The Dallas, Texas native led the Lobos in scoring in nine games and tied for the team high in two others

Wilson finished fourth in scoring and field-goal percentage, ninth in free throw percentage (.710) and tied for 10th in assists per game (2.9) and steals per game (1.4), while playing the fifth-most minutes (33.7). Wilson took the most free throws amongst conference players at 100, making the second most of 71. She twice was named MW Player of the Week during the conference season on Jan. 29 and March 7.

Augmon had an equally impressive junior season, scoring in double figures in all 17 games that she played in with three games with 20-plus points, leading the Lobos in scoring three times, and averaged 14.8 points per game, shooting 42.1% from the floor. In addition, she averaged a conference-best 1.94 steals per game, finishing with 33 in conference games with a steal in 14 games and multiple steals in eight. She had three games with four or more steals and a game with five steals against Wyoming.

The Lobo point guard finished sixth in scoring and in field-goal percentage, fourth in assists per game (3.6), eighth in free throw percentage (.727) and 13th in rebounds per game (5.9), playing in the second-most minutes amongst conference players at 34.4. She also earned MW Player of the Week twice during the conference season on Feb. 12 and Jan. 22.

In addition, she tallied three double-doubles with 13 points and 10 assists against Utah State, 22 points and 16 rebounds against Colorado State and 15 points and 10 assists against Nevada. She set several career highs against MW opponents, twice scoring 22 points for a career high, as well as twice dishing out 10 assists for a career high and had 16 rebounds.

In his eighth year at UNM, Bradbury guided the Lobos to a second-place conference finish after projected to finish sixth in the preseason coaches poll. He did so with only one starter returning from a season ago, with the Lobos finishing 12-6 in conference and with 10-plus wins for the fourth consecutive year. Only UNM and UNLV have won 10 or more MW games in each of the last four years. Further, UNM has finished in the top three in the MW in each of the last four years (first in 2021, second in 2022, tied for third in 2023 and second in 2024).

Four Lobos averaged double figures in conference, the most for any school, led by Wilson (17.7), Augmon (14.8), Viané Cumber (11.4) and Paula Reus (10.8).
