JT Toppin Earns Eighth Mountain West Freshman of the Week Honor

by Steve Kirkland

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico’s JT Toppin was named Mountain West Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Toppin was honored for the eighth time this season after shining during the Lobos’ road trip to Nevada and San Diego State.

With the honor, Toppin is just one honor shy of the record for most Mountain West Freshman of the Week in a season, set by Boise State’s Tyson Degenhart, who was honored nine times in 2021-22.

Last week, as the Lobos split a pair of Quad 1 road games, Toppin averaged 14.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 60 percent from the floor and 100 percent from the line. In UNM’s 83-82 victory at Nevada on Tuesday, Toppin had 11 points and nine rebounds on 5-10 shooting. In Friday’s loss at San Diego State, Toppin had 18 points (7-10 FG) and 10 rebounds (7 offensive) for his ninth double-double of the season, extending his Lobo freshman record. It was his sixth double-double in conference play, tied for the most among all Mountain West players.

New Mexico (20-6, 8-5 MW) returns home for a pair of home games next week, hosting Colorado State on Feb. 21 and Air Force on Feb. 24. Tickets for both games are on sale now at GoLobos.com/tickets.
