Lobos Move to 5-0 for Best Start Since 1998
SPOKANE, Wash. — The UNM women’s tennis team is taking this whole 25th Anniversary of the Mountain West to heart. New Mexico won its fifth straight to open the season, and third straight in Spokane, beating Eastern Washington 4-1 to move to a perfect 5-0, its best start ever in the Mountain West era.
The Lobos last started this hot in 1998 when the team opened at 12-0. That was when UNM was in the WAC, one year before the formation of the Mountain West.
UNM swept the doubles point with Leonie Hoppe and Katherine Jhang winning 6-4 at No. 1 singles to clinch the point after Maud and Bente Vandeputte won easily at No. 3 doubles, winning 6-1.
In singles, UNM had their way with the Eagles. Sarah O’Connor picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 to pace the Lobos. Hsuan Huang won easily at No. 3 taking a 6-1, 6-0. Eastern Washington got on the board with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles, but Maud Vandeputte ended things with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.
The Lobos now return home for a pair, hosting Northern Arizona on Friday at noon and Abilene Christian on Sunday at 11 am.
