Lobos Drop Saturday Games at Louisiana Classics

by Allison Weiss

LAFAYETTE, La.— The Lobos dropped both games to start the Louisiana Classics, falling to Chattanooga 4-2 and Cal 16-3 in five.

Emma Bramson led the Lobos with three hits on the day with Chloe Yeatts recording two and four different Lobos with one. Bramson and Keyannah Chavez accounted for two RBI apiece with Karly Smith adding one in her first collegiate at-bat.

GAME 1: CHATTANOOGA 4, UNM 2
The Mocs opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first on a bases-loaded walk and added two runs in the third and a run in the fourth before the Lobos closed the game with the final two runs.

UNM had runners reach in the first three innings, leaving a combined four runners on base including two in scoring position, before pushing a run across in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly. Katherine Brunner led off with a walk and advanced on a wild pitch to move into scoring position. A groundout allowed Brunner to move to third on the throw, with Sydney Carithers hitting a fly ball to center with Brunner tagging for a run.

The score held at 4-1 until the bottom of the sixth, with Brunner again reaching on a walk and moving to second on a wild pitch. Elizabeth Baylor singled to right to put runners on the corners with one out, however, Brunner was thrown out at home on the next play on a bunt with the pitcher throwing home. Bramson followed with a single to right field to score Baylor to cut the deficit in half before the inning came to end with two more runner left on.

After a clean inning in the top of the seventh, the Lobos had the tying run at the plate following a one-out single to center by Ashley Archuleta, but a double play ended the opportunity.

Four Lobos finished with a hit with Bramson responsible for both RBI.

GAME 2: CAL 16, UNM 3
The Golden Bears put 11 runs on the board in the first inning, which proved to be enough in the five-inning game.

UNM plated two runs in the third after Bramson reached on a single down the right field line and Carithers reached on a fielding error to start the inning. Rachael Hathoot’s fly out to center advanced both runners, and after Yeatts drew a walk following a full count, Chavez delivered with a hit back up the middle to score Bramson and Carithers.

Cal matched that with two runs of its own in the home half of the inning and added three in the bottom of the fourth for its final runs of the game. UNM added one more run in the top of the fifth as Gabrielle Briones recorded her first collegiate hit on a single down the left field line to start the inning, reaching second on a passed ball and stole third. Karly Smith recorded her first RBI in her first collegiate at-bat, scoring Briones on a grounder to the pitcher before a popup ended the game.

Bramson went 2-2 at the plate to lead the Lobos with three Lobos getting a hit, while Chavez drove in two of the runs.

UNM closes out the weekend with a final game against No. 21 Louisiana at 8 a.m. MT on Sunday with the game on ESPN+.
