Hepfer Takes 7th In Platform at NAU

by Frank Mercogliano

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Kristen Hepfer finished off the NAU Diving Invitational with a seventh-place finish in the platform, an event that UNM doesn’t normally get to compete in during the season.  Abigail Bouravnev was the only other to compete in the event, finishing 14th overall.

Hepfer scored a 206.25 in the prelims and then turned in her best two dives on back-to-back rounds in the finals.  On her second dive she scored a 48.60 on an inward 2 1/2 somersault tuck and she followed that with a 45.60 on a back 1 1/2 somersault with a 1 1/2 twist free. She scored a 213.50 in the finals for her seventh-place finish.

Bouravnev was hurt in the finals by a no-score on her final dive, which followed a terrific run of dives including a 49.40 on a back 2 1/2 somersault 1/2 twist pike.

UNM now readies for the Mountain West Championships February 21-24 in Houston, Texas.
