Reed Spenrath Named Baseball Preseason All-MW; Lobos Picked to Finish Fifth

by Connor Gilbert

New Mexico Baseball First Baseman Reed Spenrath has been named to the Mountain West Baseball Preseason All-Conference Team, with the Lobos picked fifth in the preseason poll as voted on by the league’s coaches.

A first-team all-conference selection in first season with the Lobos, Spenrath led the team and ranked second in the conference in 2023 with 19 home runs – the sixth-most in a single season in program history – and 65 RBIs. The 6’5” power hitter also led the team and ranked third in the conference with 54 runs scored, batting .321 while reaching base at a clip of .421. He finished the season with 16 multi-hit games and 18 multi-RBI games.

“Reed is a big part of us maintaining momentum heading into this spring,” said UNM Head Coach Tod Brown. “It’s always going to be a competitive league, but I think we’re up to the challenge.”

Spenrath was named to D1Baseball.com’s Top 50 First Baseman rankings last week, coming in at No. 46 in the nation. He was named one of three captains for this year’s Lobos squad along with fellow seniors Chase Weissenborn and Brett Russell.

The Lobos received 15 points and were picked to finish fifth in the Mountain West preseason coaches’ poll – the highest the Lobos have been voted to finish under Coach Brown – which was also released on Thursday. Last season, they were picked to finish seventh with seven points, and in 2021, they were picked to finish sixth with 11 points.
