Nyah Wilson Earns MW Player of the Week
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— A career high week has led to Nyah Wilson’s first conference weekly award as the Lobo guard was named Mountain West Player of the Week on Monday.
Wilson earned the honor after averaging 24.0 points per game, 7.0 rebounds per game, shot 58.3% (14-24) from the floor and 83.3% (20-24) from the line as UNM went 2-0 on the week.
The Dallas, Texas native set career highs of 24 points and 10 made free throws against Fresno State, which she matched both at Air Force on Saturday. Wilson went 7-13 from the floor and 10-12 from the free throw line in the win against Fresno State and had a nearly identical stat of 7-11 from the floor and 10-12 from the line at Air Force. In addition, she recorded first career double-double in the win at Air Force following a game-high 24 points to tie her career high and 10 rebounds.
Wilson scored nine points in the third quarter in Wednesday’s win against the Bulldogs, including the final seven Lobo points of the quarter as UNM led 58-54 at the end of the quarter, after going 3-4 from the floor and 3-4 from the line. The Lobo added six more points in the fourth quarter to give her 15 points in the final 20 minutes on 5-7 shooting and 5-6 from the free throw line.
Her impact continued on Saturday, as Wilson scored six of UNM’s points during an 8-0 run to take an 11-2 lead in the first. She finished 3-4 with two rebounds and an assist in the opening quarter as UNM outscored Air Force 20-7. She closed the game scoring 11 points in the fourth quarter against the Falcons, including two and-ones- one that made it 54-41 and one that made it 59-44. Wilson was consistent at the line, going 7-8 from the line in the final quarter.
During UNM’s four-game win streak, Wilson has averaged 20.3 points per game, shooting 51.9% (27-52) from the floor and 81.3% (26-32) at the free-throw line. Wilson has scored 20-plus points in three of the four games and double figures in all four.
When taking into account conference games, Wilson is averaging 18.3 points per game, shooting 52.6%, and has scored in double figures in all eight conference games. In addition, she’s led the Lobos in scoring in four of the last five games and five of the eight conference games. She currently ranks third in scoring among MW players, fourth in field-goal percentage, and is fifth in steals per game (1.8) and fifth in free throw percentage (78.0%), with the second most made free throws at 39 and the second most free-throw attempts at 50.
UNM has now won MW Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, with Wilson joining last week’s winner Aniyah Augmon, and for the third time this season (Charlotte Kohl). The Lobos have won four weekly conference awards this season with one freshman of the week winner (Paris Lauro).
