2024 Mountain West Opponents Announced

by Frank Mercogliano

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Mountain West announced its 2024 football matchups, including home and away designations for all games. The league slate features 42 games and 12 nonconference matchups against Oregon State and Washington State.  The Lobos in their first season under new head coach Bronco Mendenhall will feature three home conference games and four road conference games.

As previously announced, the games against the Beavers and Cougars are part of a scheduling agreement for the 2024 football season.

With UNM having just three home games in Mountain West play, UNM will host Washington State at University Stadium.  It will be the first trip to the Duke City for the Cougars since September 3, 2004, when Washington State won 21-17.  It will mark just the third meeting between the two programs as they first met in 2003, a 23-13 Cougar win.

The Lobos will host Air Force, Wyoming, and Fresno State in conference play.  The Lobos defeated Fresno State 25-17 last year and lost to Wyoming 35-26 in Laramie.  The Lobos and Air Force didn’t meet in 2023, the first time not facing each other since 1997.

On the road, the Lobos will travel to Hawai’i, Utah State, Colorado State, and San Diego State.  UNM defeated Hawai’i 42-21 on Homecoming in 2023 and last to Utah State in double overtime 44-41 last year.  UNM didn’t face either San Diego State or Colorado State, and it will be UNM’s first visit to Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.

UNM will not face Nevada, Boise State, San Jose State, and UNLV in 2024 during the regular season.  UNM’s current non-conference slate is Montana State at home and Arizona, Auburn and New Mexico State on the road.  With UNM’s game at Hawai’i, the Lobos can play a 13th game in 2024.

The schedule will play out over 14 weeks, concluding on Saturday, December 7, with the Mountain West Football Championship Game featuring the two MW teams with the highest Conference winning percentages.

The 2024 schedule follows a 7+1 model, whereby each MW program will play seven league opponents and play either Oregon State or Washington State, with an even split of four home games and four away games among the eight contests. Working off the previous three-year schedule rotation (2023-2025), matchups were rebalanced utilizing the same principles to minimize the impact on the original 2024 schedule. The schedule format and agreement with Oregon State and Washington State provide additional strength of schedule to the MW. Dates for each contest will be announced later.
