Lobos Fall to Thunderbirds
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Charlotte Kohl scored 12 points and Nyah Wilson recorded a game- and career-high 11 rebounds in Thursday night’s game against Southern Utah as the Lobos fell 58-40.
It was the third consecutive game in double figures for Kohl, while Paula Reus finished with nine points for the second-highest total on the team.
UNM struggled from the field, making 15 of its 55 shot attempts with 24 of the 40 points coming from the paint and eight points from the free-throw line, where the Lobos went 8-14.
The rebounds were even with each team finishing with 41, with the Lobos getting 14 offensive boards and converting them to 11 second-chance points, compared to 11 by the Thunderbirds that resulted in four points.
Following UNM winning the tip, Reus scored on a jumper to which SUU answered on the other end with a three-pointer. Kohl put the Lobos back in front on an and-one opportunity at 5-3 lead before the Thunderbirds hit consecutive three-pointers to take the lead and added a jumper to lead 11-5. A Kohl layup off of a feed from Lara Langermann ended the run, but the Lobos trailed 13-7 at the media timeout and by nine (18-9) at the end of the first. Kohl had five points in the first quarter behind 2-2 shooting and going 1-1 from the line and eight of UNM’s nine points in the first quarter were in the paint.
Southern Utah built its lead to 15 before a 7-0 run by the Lobos brought the game within eight at 24-16 with 4:04 remaining in the second quarter, however, it was the closest UNM would get as the Lobos trailed 33-21 at the half.
Kohl continued to carry UNM in the second quarter with five more points to give her 10 points at the break on 4-6 shooting to lead all scorers, while Wilson had seven rebounds in the first two quarters to lead all players.
The Lobos got within 11 three times in the third quarter, following a Wilson steal and fast-break layup by Aniyah Augmon midway through the quarter and again on a three-point play by Reus that made it 44-33 with 3:14 left, but couldn’t bring the game within single digits during the duration of the game.
With Thursday’s result, the Lobos fall to 7-3 on the season. UNM closes out the week on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Hampton.
