ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Nine Lobos scored in Monday’s contest with Mississippi Valley State with three in double figures, but the night belonged to Charlotte Kohl who had a career game in UNM’s 68-45 win.
The German center finished with a career-high 16 points and a career-high five blocks and brought down 20 rebounds for the second time this season to tie her career high. Monday was Kohl’s second-straight double-double and her third this season, a feat she achieved in the first two quarters at 11 rebounds and 10 points. In addition, it was the third time that the Lobo has finished with four or more blocks, sixth game with multiple blocks and seventh game with at least one block.
As a team, the Lobos registered a season-best 56 rebounds, outrebounding the Devilettes 56-39, with Paula Reus nearly reaching a double-double behind 16 points and eight rebounds, the third time this season that Reus has finished with eight rebounds. Reus tied Kohl for the game high in points and recorded her third consecutive game scoring double figures and fifth game this season. Wilson scored 14 points to round out the Lobos in double figures, the seventh game this season and the fourth consecutive game that the Lobo has finished with 10-plus points.
UNM started out with a free throw before the game officially started on an administrative technical for Mississippi Valley State, which Reus hit. It was a fast-paced start from the tip with MVSU making its first shot on a layup and the Lobos scoring the next five points. MVSU closed within a point on two separate instances, but the Lobos led 11-6 at the media timeout behind five different players scoring. The Devilettes again closed within one out of the timeout before a Reus three-pointer broke the run to stretch the lead to four at 14-10 that expanded to an 8-0 run to put UNM ahead 19-10 with the quarter closing with the Lobos in front 19-13.
UNM outrebounded MVSU 13-6 in the quarter with Aniyah Augmon scoring seven points in the quarter.
MVSU scored the first four points of the second to pull within two before a Wilson three started a 7-0 run with four of the points by Kohl as UNM took a 26-17 lead. The lead reached double digits on a Kohl hook shot with 2:10 remaining, ultimately getting to 14 on a three-pointer by Wilson as time expired that allowed UNM to head into the break ahead 38-24.
Kohl broke out in the second quarter, scoring eight points on 3-3 shooting, 2-2 shooting from the free-throw line and bringing down eight rebounds (four offensive and four defensive) and recording three blocks.
Her fifth block led to a Reus three-pointer midway through the third quarter with UNM’s lead growing to 19 on a Kohl layup that gave the Lobo her career-best 16 points. Wilson closed the quarter with the final five points, with the last basket coming on a steal and fast-break layup for the Texas native to give her 13 points in the game.
The Lobos continued to hold a steady lead throughout the fourth, stretching to 21 (61-40) on two free throws by Mackenzie Curtis with 5:37 remaining and reached the greatest margin of 26 (68-42) on a Paris Lauro layup with 1:28 left to play, UNM’s final points of the game. MVSU made one final three-pointer with 1:11 left to close the game at 68-45.
Jaelyn Bates led the Lobos with five points in the fourth and contributed two assists and a steal while playing the entire period.
