by Allison Weiss

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— A night of career highs led to another career achievement for Lobo center Charlotte Kohl, as she was announced as the Mountain West Player of the Week on Monday. It marks the first conference award for Kohl in her collegiate career.

In UNM’s lone game of the week, Kohl finished with a stat line of a career-high 14 points on a career-high six made field goals, career-high 20 rebounds, career-high four blocks and an assist for her first double-double of the season and second of her career, a feat she achieved by halftime with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Of her 20 rebounds, 10 were offensive, of those five translated to 11 of UNM’s 16 second-chance points, eight of which were scored by Kohl. The other basket (a three-pointer) she had the assist on.

Additionally, the German native became the first Lobo to have 20 rebounds in a game since Richelle van der Keijl had 20 against New Mexico State exactly seven years prior on Nov. 15, 2016. Her 20 rebounds are also the most by a Mountain West player this season.

Kohl had six points, five rebounds and a block in the first quarter, opening the scoring for the Lobos on an and-one opportunity. Her timely contributions continued in the second quarter as her second block led to a fast-break layup by Aniyah Augmon on the other end to tie game at 25, her offensive rebound led to three-pointer by Lara Langermann that tied game at 28 and her offensive rebound and putback gave UNM a 36-34 lead as part of an 8-0 run for the Lobos to take 40-34 lead.

In the third quarter, her offensive rebound at putback put the Lobos in front 47-45, one of her seven rebounds in the quarter. Her final rebound and points came on the same sequence in the fourth quarter as her offensive rebound and putback gave UNM a 67-65 lead with 4:11 remaining.

Along with being recognized by the MW, Kohl was also recognized by NCAA March Madness as an elite performer.

Following her 20-rebound performance, Kohl currently has 40 rebounds on the season for a 10.0 rebound a game average. She ranks 27th in the NCAA in rebounds, 22nd in offensive rebounds per game (4.8) and 43rd in rebounds per game. She also ranks 50th in blocks with seven. She is second in the MW in rebounds and rebounds per game and third in blocks and blocks per game.

Up next for Kohl and the Lobos is the Cancun Challenge with games against Montana State and Georgia Tech starting on Thursday on FloHoops.
