Lobos Start Strong in Atlanta, Dallas

ATLANTA, Ga. — The Lobos opened strong at the Georgia Tech Invitational, winning four of five singles matches on the opening day of play.

UNM picked up wins by Arthur Bellegy, Alex Maggs, Aram Noroozian and Nicolas Recoura on the opening day.  Bellegy took a 6-2, 6-4 win over Liberty freshman Matija Samardzic while Maggs defeated his teammate Luis Felipe Miguel 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 who was coming off Rouind of 16 showing at the ITA Atlantic Region Championships and was 6-2 on the season.  Bellegy’s win made him 8-1 in his first season as a Lobo.

Noroozian faced off with Georgia State sophomore Gabriele Datei, winning 6-3, 6-4 to deny Datei a 10th win on the year.  Recoura took down Georgia’s Davis Taylor in a tight affair 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 6-4.  UNM’s only loss in singles was a 6-2, 6-4 loss for Avery Tallakson against Georgia Tech’s Robert Bauer.

UNM lost both doubles matches on the day with Tallakson and Noroozian losing 8-2 to Bauer and Elias Shokry of Tech with Maggs and Recoura lost 8-6 to Mississippi State tandem Nemanja Malesevic and Marshall Landry.  Arthur Bellegy teamed with Alabama’s Roan Jones for an 8-7 (7-4) win over Georgia Tech’s  Owen DeMuth and Krish Arora.

DALLAS, Texas —In Dallas at the Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge, the Lobos went 3-1 in singles and 3-1 in doubles on the opening day.

Rafael Abdulsalam picked up the most decisive victory in Dallas for UNM with a 6-1, 6-2 win over SMU’s Liam Krall as UNM played the host Mustangs in all four singles matches.  Daniil Kakhniuk earned a straight-set 6-3, 6-4 win over Kyle Sillman while Georgio Samaha won a three-setter 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8).  That was the same margin for Ryoma Matsushita, who lost his match to Callaway Clark 6-1, 1-6, 1-0 (10-8).

In doubles, both Lobo pairings won the morning matches with Matsushita and Kakhniuk winning 7-5 over TCU’s Alonso Vivanco and Tomas Jurousek while Abdulsalam and Samaha won 6-4 over Texas Tech pair Reed Collier and Jonas Gundacker.  In the afternoon session, Matsushita and Kakhniuk again won,this one 6-4 over SMU’s Krall and Clark.  Abdulsalam and Samaha couldn’t finish off the sweep as SMU’s Cloudand Sillman won 6-4.

Action continues Saturday with a flip of one doubles match for each pairing and two singles matches for everyone.
