HIGHLANDS RANCH Colo. – The New Mexico women’s golf team opened play Monday at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate with a strong first round at the DU Golf Club. The Lobos shot 6-under during the first 18 holes to be tied for third place among the 14-team field that is highlighted by eight top-60 teams.
Host Denver holds the first-round lead at 16-under. Cal is in second at 7-under, followed by the Lobos and Kansas tied for third at 6-under. UNLV rounds out the top five at 5-under.
“We played steady today,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “The course is giving up a lot of birdies so tomorrow’s round will be a good test.”
Myah McDonald led UNM on Friday with a 3-under round of 69, ending the day T-5th on the individual leaderboard. Maria Caparros Levin shot a 2-under 70 and Lauren Lehigh had a 1-under 71, as three Lobos shot in red figures. Lisa-Marie Pagliano added an even par round of 72, while Ciara Rushmer rounded out the lineup with a first-round 79.
The tournament will continue Saturday and conclude Sunday at the DU Golf Club in suburban Denver.
