Azkara Sweeps Again to Move to Quarters in Singles, Semis in Doubles

by Frank Mercogliano

NORMAN, Okla. — He’s not the Mountain West Player of the Year for nothing.  Arda Azkara just keeps winning, this time to advance to the quarterfinals in singles and the semifinals in doubles of the Norman Open, a USTA M-15 Pro Circuit Tournament hosted on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.

Azkara won in singles, defeating Robin Catry, formerly of N.C. State, 6-4,3-6, 7-6 (7-5).  That advances Azkara to the quarterfinals of the Norman Open, where he draws the top-seed in USA’a Learner Tien, a former All-Pac-12 player for the USC Trojans.

In doubles, Azkara and Auburn’s Tyler Stice had a wild quarterfinal win over Chad Kissell and Mykhallo Kvantaliani, winning 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 1-0 (10-6) to move into the semifinals, where Azkara will have another battle with the top seed.  This time against Britain’s Mark Whitehouse, who in June was ranked 222 among the ATP.  Whitehouse is teamed with Matias Soto, a Chilean who played collegiately at Baylor.

Both matches are slated for Friday.
