Ten Lobos Score in Exhibition Win over Eastern New Mexico
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Ten players scored, including three in double figures, as the Lobos opened up the 2023-24 season with a 77-57 exhibition win over Eastern New Mexico Sunday.
Junior Viané Cumber led all scorers with 16 points, and added seven rebounds and two assists, while Aniyah Augmon filled the stat sheet with 13 points, five assists, four steals and two rebounds. In her first appearance for UNM, Nyah Wilson scored 15 points and added five rebounds and a steal.
Two newcomers made their biggest impact on defense as Charlotte Kohl led with a game-high eight rebounds to go with a block, while freshman Paris Lauro collected seven rebounds and a block in her first game as a Lobo.
As a team, UNM finished with 10 steals and had a 48-26 advantage in rebounds with 16 boards occurring on the offensive end.
In addition to 10 players scoring, of UNM’s 30 made field goals, 20 were assisted with Lara Langermann and Augmon leading the way with five apiece, Jaelyn Bates adding four and eight different players with at least one assist.
An Augmon three opened the scoring 19 seconds into Sunday’s exhibition, and after the Greyhounds matched with a three-pointer on the other end, UNM asserted itself with an 11-0 run over a span of 6:51.
ENMU pulled within four at the start of the second quarter, with Cumber and Wilson hitting back-to-back three-pointers followed by a Kohl layup to extend the lead back to double figures at 24-14. A Bates three-pointer with 3:34 left in the quarter pushed UNM’s lead to its largest point of the game to that point at 14 (33-19) with the Lobos holding an eight-point lead of 35-27 at the half.
A Wilson defensive rebound led to a fast-break layup by the Lobo guard, spurring a 7-0 run in the third quarter that pushed the lead back up to 13 before the Greyhounds went on their best run of the game, a 9-0 run to cut the lead down to four at the 5:59 mark of the quarter.
Wilson, Cumber and Augmon rallied the Lobos with three consecutive layups to swing the momentum back to UNM, the last coming off of an Augmon offensive board and putback. A Hannah Robbins three-pointer with 34 seconds remaining made it an 11-point game with the quarter coming to an end with the Lobos in front 51-42.
A 6-0 run midway through the quarter allowed the Lobos to pull away at 67-52, with Augmon registering two steals that led to fast-break layups in addition to two assists. UNM closed with a 10-0 run for its largest lead of the game at 23 before ENMU scored the final three points for the 20-point win.
The Lobos outscored the Greyhounds 26-15 in the final 10 minutes with Augmon accounting for eight points, four steals and three assists.
UNM has one more exhibition on the schedule against Adams State on Oct. 29 at 4 p.m. before the regular season begins on Monday, Nov. 6 against Texas Southern.
