Men's Tennis Has Four in Round of 16
STILLWATER, Okla. — Four Lobos, Arda Azkara, Georgio Samaha, Arthur Bellegy and Rafael Abdulsalam all advanced to the Round of 16 in the main singles draw of the ITA Central Region Championships.
UNM has a change to advance three into the quarterfinals, and the Lobos are guaranteed one berth as Azkara and Samaha will play each other in the Round of 16.
UNM’s only doubles team to advance beyond the Round of 32 lost to the top-seeded team from Drake Matija Matic and Oliver Johanssen of Drake, losing 8-4.
In singles, UNM almost got a fifth into the round of 16 as Alexander Maggs fell in a tight three-set match to the No. 7 seed Jeremy Schifris of Drake. Two Lobos, Samaha and Abdulsalam, knocked off seeded opponents to advance, with Samaha beating Arkansas’ No. 11 seed Benedikt EMesz and Abdulsalam beating No. 13 seed Kristof Minarik of Wichita State.
