Roberts Scores in Lobo Loss to Broncos

by Allison Weiss

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Sophia Roberts scored her second goal of the season and Paris Dalton recorded her third assist of the season in the 68th minute as the Lobos fell 2-1 to Boise State Sunday.

The Lobos had a chance to get onto the board in the second minute after Brynn Boeyink played a perfect ball into the box for Roberts to put a head on it, with the Bronco keeper making the save by getting a right hand on it, before Boise State scored in the seventh minute with the score holding at the half.

Both teams had four shots on goal in the first half with UNM having a 9-8 edge in total shots.

UNM opened the second half with a chance in the 49th minute with three Lobos on the attack deep in Broncos’ territory but were unable to get off a shot before getting called for an offside. Boise State added a goal in the 52nd minute, with the Lobos working to find an answer with a series of shots and corner kick opportunities.

Natalie DeGagne fired from distance in the 56th minute that sailed over the net and the Lobos kept the pressure on with a shot that was blocked in the 57th minute, and later created a corner kick opportunity in the 60th minute that Myah Isais got a head on but couldn’t put on target. UNM had another corner kick in the 62nd minute that the ball got caught up near the goal with the Lobos unable to get off a shot.

The Lobos had a couple of chances in the 65th minute, started by Dalton, before converting in the 68th minute, with Dalton again being the catalyst of the opportunity.

Dalton had a shot on goal that was saved in the 65th minute with Nicole Anderson going unmarked and getting the rebound in close range, taking a shot that was saved by the foot of the Bronco keeper. The Lobos broke through in the 68th minute on a free kick outside of the 18-yard box, with Dalton’s initial shot getting saved by the Bronco goalkeeper as Roberts was there for the rebound and immediate shot, putting it in the back of the net for her second goal of the season and Dalton’s third assist of the season.

UNM kept fighting to find the equalizer, creating a chance in the 84th minute with Ellie Robinson sending a ball into the box and Mercedes Morris getting a head on it, but the Lobo was unable to direct the ball on target. Mia Leon was tripped just outside of the box later in the 84th minute with Dalton taking the free kick that was punched away by the Boise State goalkeeper. The Lobos had two more chances in the 86th minute as Kennedy Brown took a shot that was wide of the goal and Margaux Clarke created her own shot that sailed over the goal. Fiona Jenkins had a final shot in the 89th minute that was off target for the 2-1 final.

The Lobos had a 14-5 advantage in shots in the final 45 minutes with a 23-13 advantage in shots and 9-6 in shots on goal in the match. Roberts finished with a match-high four shots on goal and Dalton with a career-high three.

UNM (4-4-4, 1-3-2 MW) heads on the road for its next two with Nevada up first on Thursday, Oct. 12.
