Azkara Advances to ITA All-American Round of 64

by Frank Mercogliano

TULSA, Okla. — Arda Azkara bypassed prequalifying for the ITA All-American Championships and he showed why on Monday, defeating James Hopper of Virginia 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) to advance to the Round of 64.  Hopper was 5-2 on the season and helped Virginia to the 2023 national title.

For Azkara, it continued a solid fall season as he was coming off a semifinal appearance in the M15 Corley Invitational, an even thosted by UNM but not a collegiate event, meaning the results don’t count for his season record.  Still Azkara was able to bounce back after dropping the opening set.  He advances to take on seeded Jack Anthrop of Ohio State in the ROund of 64 on Tuesday morning.

In doubles, the team of Azkara and Alex Maggs fell in the Round of 64 to East Tennessee State’s Dimitri Badra and Francisco Lamas 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8).
