SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ––New Mexico men’s golf team continued play at the Mirabel Maui Jim Intercollegiate on Saturday with the second round at Mirabel Golf Club. All five Lobos shot in red numbers as UNM posted an 11-under round to finish the day in eighth place at 18-under

Auburn continues to lead the event, at 41-under through 36 holes. San Diego State (39-under), Fresno State (32-under), SMU (31-under) and Ohio State (26-under) round out the top five.

Matthew Watkins led the Lobos on Saturday, posting a 5-under bogey-free 66 in the second round. He is T-14th on the individual leaderboard at 8-under for through 36 holes. The other four Lobos, Carson Herron, Bastien Amat, Albert Boneta and Alvaro Portillo all shot a 2-under 69 during Saturday’s round.

In the individual event at nearby Legends Trail, Connor Adams finished tied for second at 12-under after shooting a career-best 66 for the second straight day.

“Today was another solid team performance,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “Anytime you throw out a 69 as your high score, there are a lot of positives. I’m also really proud of Watkins, as he was in complete control of his game with a bogey-free 66. On the individual side, I am really happy with how Connor Adams played at Legends Trail. It’s not easy to follow up a great round of 66, sleep on the lead, and then do it again with another 66. He put himself in position to win. Even though he finished second, he will be able to use this as momentum throughout the season.”

The Mirabel Maui Jim Intercollegiate will conclude Sunday in Scottsdale.
