by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –– New Mexico senior Matthew Watkins was named the Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Month for September, conference officials announced Thursday. Watkins was honored for the first time in his career after three top-10 finishes to start the season.

Watkins shot under par in all nine of his rounds to start the season, posting three top-10 finishes, more than his first three seasons combined (two). He opened the year with a sixth-place finish at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate in Scottsdale, shooting 68-66-65 for a 14-under total of 199, becoming just the seventh Lobo to shoot under 200 for a tournament and the first to accomplish the feat since 2007. At the USF Intercollegiate in San Francisco, he shot 70-69-69 to earn his first career top-five finish, placing T-5th. Earlier this week at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, Watkins helped the Lobos win the team title at their home event by finishing T-7th with rounds of 70-71-67. His 67 in the final round was the Lobos’ best of the final day, as they passed Texas Tech to capture their first win at the event in four years.

Watkins is the first Lobo to earn Mountain West Player of the Month/Week honors since Bastien Amat in April of 2022.

The Lobos return to action Oct. 9-10 when they close out the fall portion of the schedule with the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, hosted by California.
