Lobos In Second After First Day of Tucker Intercollegiate

by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team had a strong opening day of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on Monday, its home event at the UNM Championship Course. The Lobos shot back-to-back rounds of 280 to sit in second place at 16-under through 36 holes.

Texas Tech is the 36-hole leader at 18-under, two shots ahead of the Lobos. San Francisco is third at 14-under, San Diego State is fourth at 13-under and UNLV (9-under) rounds out the top five of the 20-team field.

“Today was a solid first day of play,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “We have three guys in the top 15, and when you do that, you are going to be in contention to win the tournament. The two guys who aren’t in the top 15, Carson and Connor, bounced back from 74s in the morning to post under-par scores in the afternoon that counted for us. You can’t win the golf tournament on the first day, but you can give yourself a chance to win. We did that and it will be fun tomorrow being paired with Texas Tech again.”

Albert Boneta posted rounds of 69 and 68 on Monday and is T-2nd on the individual leaderboard at 7-under after 36 holes, two shots off the lead. Bastien Amat is also in the top 10, sitting T-8th at 5-under after rounds of 67 and 72. Matthew Watkins is T-15th at 3-under after rounds of 70 and 71, continuing his streak of shooting par or better in every round this season. Connor Adams, in the lineup for the first time in his Lobo career, is at even par after rounds of 74 and 70, while Carson Herron posted rounds of 74 and 71.

The William H. Tucker Intercollegiate will conclude Tuesday at the UNM Championship Course. Play will begin at 7:45 a.m. and admission is free.
