NORMAN, Okla. – The New Mexico women’s golf team opened play Saturday at the Schooner Fall Classic, taking on an elite field at Belmar Golf Club. The Lobos shot 10-over during the first 18 holes to be tied for 11th place after the first round.

Reigning NCAA Champion Wake Forest is the first-round leader after shooting 10-under. Houston shot 6-under and is the only other team under par after 18 holes. Virginia Tech (even), Tulsa (1-over) and Iowa State (3-over) round out the top five of the 15-team field.

“Par-3 and Par-5 scoring was key today to shoot a low round,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “We will need to be better in those areas tomorrow.”

Lauren Lehigh and Lisa-Marie Pagliano led the Lobos during Saturday’s play, each shooting a 2-over 72. Myah McDonald and Maria Caparros Levin each shot a 3-over 73. Rebecca Galasso rounded out the lineup with a 77 in the first round.

The tournament will continue Sunday and conclude Monday at Belmar Golf Club in Norman.
