Lobos Finish Fourth at USF Intercollegiate

SAN FRANCISCO –– The New Mexico men’s golf team concluded the USF Intercollegiate on Tuesday with the final round at TPC Harding Park. The Lobos shot 5-under over the final 18 holes to finish the event in fourth place at 15-under.

Loyola Marymount won the tournament with a 38-under total for the 54 holes. Host San Francisco was second at 25-under, followed by UC Davis at 17-under and the Lobos at 15-under among the 13-team field.

“I am really proud of the way the guys battled coming down the stretch today,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “We had struggled on the back nine in the previous two rounds, so to close out the tournament by shooting 7-under on the back nine today showed a lot of grit.”

Matthew Watkins capped his second straight top-five finish of the season, posting a final round 69 to finish the event T-5th at 8-under. Albert Boneta added a top-10 finish, carding a 70 on Tuesday to finish T-10th at 6-under for the week. Carson Herron and Oliver Cage each shot a final-round even par 72, while Bastien Amat rounded out the lineup with a 74.

“Watkins continues to impress me with his strong play and another top-five finish,” said Harrington. “Everything he does right now makes the game look easy.”

The Lobos return to action next week with the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, their lone home event of the season at the UNM Championship Course. The tournament runs Monday-Tuesday (Sept. 25-26) and admission is free.
