COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Leonie Hoppe picked up a title of Delta Flight to lead UNM at the 2023 Bedford Cup in the Mountains, hosted by the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Hoppe led the Lobos, who played all nine players and went a combined 20-12 in singles and 8-6 in doubles.  Hoppe was the winner of the Delta Flight, winning four matches, three in straight sets.  She opened in the round of 16 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over BYU’s Avery Pope and followed that with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Utah State’s Cielo Tapia-Cruz.  In the semifinals Hoppe finally lost a set, but still advanced to the finals with a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 comeback win over Boise State’s Nicole Discenza.  In the finals, Hoppe faced Colorado State’s Sarka Richterova and she handled her with ease, winning 6-3, 6-0, her third love-set win of the tournament.

Other highlights in singles included Bente Vandeputte, who lost her first match and then won her final four.  Maria Sodre went 3-1 for UNM and Hsuan Huang went 3-2.

In doubles, both the pairings of Sarah O’Connor and Maud Vandeputte and Katherine Jhang and Hsuan Huang each went 3-1 in doubles.
