Lobos In Seventh After Opening Round of Mirabel Maui Jim Intercollegiate
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team opened the 2023-24 season with the first round of the Mirabel Maui Jim Intercollegiate on Friday at Mirabel Golf Club. The Lobos shot 7-under during the opening round and are in seventh place after the opening 18 holes of the event.
Auburn is the first-round leader at 24-under, followed by San Diego State at 21-under. SMU (18-under), Fresno State (11-under) and Oregon (10-under) round out the top five, followed by Ohio State (9-under) and the Lobos (7-under) among the first round leaders of the 15-team field.
“The first round of the season is always tough and the guys handled adversity well today,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “I am very proud of how solid Watkins and Herron played today to keep the team in good position going into round two.”
Carson Herron led the Lobos during Friday’s play, shooting a 4-under 67, ending the day T-13th on the individual leaderboard. Matthew Watkins was also in red figures on Friday, posting a 3-under round of 68. Bastien Amat, Albert Boneta and Alvaro Portillo rounded out the UNM lineup, each shooting even par 71 in the first round.
The Mirabel Maui Jim Intercollegiate will continue Saturday and conclude Sunday in Scottsdale.
