2023 Hall of Honor Class Announced

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Danny Granger, who starred at UNM and then became a star in the NBA headlines a star-studded list of inductees for the 2023 UNM Hall of Honor.  Along with Granger, Matthieu Amgwerd (Tennis), Andy Boyens (Soccer), Michael Putnam (Golf), and Bernard “Bernie” Rivers (Track & Field) will be inducted in a ceremony on Thursday, November 2. Additionally, Tom Daulton (Swimming & Water Polo) will be inducted as the 2023 Distinguished Service Award winner.

Along with the honorees, the 2022-23 Coach of the Year Jill Trujillo (Golf), Co-Female Athletes of the Year Jadyn Edwards (Soccer) and Amelia Mazza-Downie (Cross Crountry/Track & Field), and Male Athlete of the Year Arda Azkara (Tennis) will be celebrated.

A reminder that fans can attend the awards dinner, which will be held on Thursday, November 2 at 7:00 p.m. at the Events Center at Sandia Golf Club. Tickets are $60 each or $600 for a table of 10. Call the Lobo Club at 505-925-2582 to purchase tickets or inquire about sponsorship opportunities.

Below are biographical sketches on UNM’s inductees in the Hall of Honor for 2023.

Matthieu Amgwerd (Tennis 1998-2000)

  • The inaugural Mountain West Male Student-Athlete of the Year (2000)
  • Ranked as high as No. 6 in the men’s singles rankings (record high for UNM Men’s Tennis) (2000)
  • Ranked No. 14 nationally in doubles (2000)
  • Led UNM to its first ever Mountain West Title in any sport(2000)
  • Named an NCAA All-American in singles (2000)
  • ITA Mountain Region singles and doubles champion (1999)
  • Won two Bronze Medals at World University Games, winning in 2001 and 2003
  • Swiss Tennis Coach for World University Games 2013-present

  • Three-time All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation First-Team Selection (2004, 2005, 2006)
  • Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Year (2004)

Bernard “Bernie” Rivers (Track & Field 1964-1967)(Posthumous)

  • Established an NCAA Freshman record in the 220-yard dash at 20.6 seconds
  • Ranked No. 2 in the 220-yard dash (1964)
  • NCAA All-American honors in the 100-yard and 200-yard dashes (1964, 1965)
  • Western Athletic Conference Champion in the 100-yard dash (1965)
  • Anchored the 440-yard relay Western Athletic Conference Championship team (1965)
  • Ranked No. 12 in the world in the 100-yard dash (1965)
  • Ranked No. 7 in the world in the 220 yard dash (1965)
  • Set UNM school records in five events: the 100-yard dash, the 220-yard dash, the 440-yard relay, the 880-yard relay and the one-mile relay (1967)
  • Ran eight of the ten fastest times in Lobo history in the 100-yard dash
  • Ran five of the ten fastest times in Lobo history in the 220-yard dash

Tom Daulton- Distinguished Service Award (Swimming and Water Polo 1973-1977)

  • Bachelor of Business, Management Information Systems (University of New Mexico, 1977)
  • Bachelor of Science, Mathematics (University of New Mexico, 1977)
  • Master of Business Administration (UTA, 1981)
  • Various volunteer roles at the University of New Mexico including: Anderson School of Management Board Member, UNM Alumni Association, UNM Foundation
  • Continues to organize annual swimming alumni event at UNM, inviting men’s and women’s swimming alumni back to campus
  • Continued support of UNM Swimming and Diving program making impactful contributions to the H2O Club which has allowed the Swimming and Diving program to be funded at an enhanced level, including facility improvements such as a new video and scoreboard and touch pads in 2019.
