Lobos Lead MW with 141 Spring MW All-Academic Picks

by Frank

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of New Mexico’s Winter/Spring sports programs of men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s track and field (indoor and outdoor), men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, baseball, softball and swimming & diving combined for 141 honorees on the Mountain West All-Academic Squad.  That total led the Mountain West and gave UNM 220 total honorees, combining with the 79 honors picked up in the Fall.

The 220 total for the year marked the 10th straight year that UNM has had at least 180 honorees, and that is the longest current streak in the Mountain West.  No other school has a streak longer than six straight.

To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and competed in 50 percent of the teams completed varsity contests. Some latitude was permitted to accommodate injured student-athletes.

The Lobos had 22 student-athletes honored in baseball, two in men’s basketball, four in women’s basketball, five in men’s golf, seven in women’s golf, 16 in softball, 14 in swimming & diving, six in men’s tennis, seven in women’s tennis, 21 in men’s track & field and 37 in women’s track & field.  Baseball’s 22 honorees led all MW baseball programs, and the softball teams’ 16 honorees tied for the league lead.
