UNM Volleyball Recognized for Academic Success with USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—The University of New Mexico volleyball program has earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for the fourth consecutive season and in addition has earned the additional Honor Roll distinction representing the top 20 percent of the team GPAs in the division for the second consecutive season.
UNM was one of 45 schools and one of two Mountain West schools to earn the Honor Roll recognition.
“I am thrilled for our program to once again receive recognition for our academic achievement with the AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll distinction,” commented head volleyball coach Jon Newman-Gonchar. “We do not take this lightly and this is something that we take tremendous pride in as a program.
“A huge shoutout to our student-athletes who have truly embraced our program’s motto of committing to the classroom and winning the academics.”
The award, initiated in the 1992–93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale.
As a team, the Lobos finished with a 3.70 and a 3.73 in each of the semesters, with eight Lobos carrying a 3.5 GPA or better and three with a 4.0 or better. Further, the spring semester marked the third consecutive semester with a 3.7 GPA or better and the 24th consecutive semester with a 3.0 or better.
Of note, it is the eighth time in the last nine years that the Lobos have received the team academic award and the fourth time under Newman-Gonchar, who is entering his fifth season in 2023.
