Shane Douma-Sanchez Added to Men’s Basketball Roster
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico announced Tuesday the addition of Shane Douma-Sanchez to the roster. A 6-1 guard, Douma-Sanchez is an incoming freshman who will join the program as a non-scholarship player.
A native of Albuquerque, Douma-Sanchez comes to UNM after a standout high school career at Del Norte High School. The 2023 New Mexico Mr. Basketball, he is a three-time first-team 4A All-State honoree. In 2022-23, he led the state in scoring at 32.5 points per game, in field goals with 273 and free throws with 200. He also averaged 9.0 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 2.2 steals per game as a senior. Douma-Sanchez became the school’s all-time leading scorer, eclipsing the record of Scott Bamforth, who went on to star at Weber State and professionally overseas. He led Del Norte to the 2021 4A state championship and a runner-up finish in 2022. This past January, Douma-Sanchez scored 60 points against Eldorado, the most points in a game ever by an Albuquerque high school player and ninth-most in New Mexico high school history.
“It is always important for us to recruit the best players in the state of New Mexico and we have done that with the addition of Shane,” said head coach Richard Pitino. “He is a winner. He is the state player of the year. He put up some incredible stats in high school and led his team to a lot of success and we believe he will be a great Lobo.”
“Becoming a Lobo is a lifelong dream come true,” said Douma-Sanchez. “I grew up coming to games at The Pit and going to the summer camps. I always imagined what it would be like to put on that uniform and run down the ramp in front of a sold out Pit. I appreciate the coaches for giving me this opportunity and I can’t wait to get to work.”
Douma-Sanchez joins a freshman class that includes Jadyn Toppin and Tru Washington, who signed National Letters of Intent with the Lobos over the past year.
