Lobos Selected for NCAA Salem Regional

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico men’s golf team was selected to participate in the NCAA Salem Regional, as the NCAA announced the regional fields on Wednesday. The tournament will be held May 15-17 at The Cliffs at Keowee Falls in Salem, S.C. The course is located just outside of Clemson, which is the host school.

The Lobos are making their 30th NCAA Regional appearance since the format was adopted in 1989, having advanced to the NCAA Championships 18 times. UNM finished 10th last year while competing at the Palm Beach Gardens Regional in Florida. New Mexico last advanced to the NCAA Championships in 2017, their 42nd overall NCAA Championship appearance.

The 14 teams competing in the Salem Regional are North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Texas A&M, San Diego State, Georgia Southern, Arkansas, Purdue, New Mexico, Clemson, Furman, Middle Tennessee, Northern Illinois, Long Island and Longwood. The top five teams at the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, held May 26-31 in Scottsdale, Ariz. The top individual (not on advancing teams) will also advance to the NCAA Championships.

“It is a great field, but every regional has a great field,” said head coach Glen Millican. “If you got selected today, it means you have had a great season and are playing well. No matter the region, you are going to have to play well to get through. I like our region. We have played in South Carolina this season and played well there. This course is a little bit different, but at least it isn’t the first time we have traveled to the east coast or played in that time zone. I know we have done everything we can to prepare and I’m excited to see us compete.”

The Lobos are making their second trip to South Carolina this season. In March, New Mexico was second at the Hootie at Bulls Bay, one of three runner-up finishes this season to go along with two victories.
