ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After rising to the top of the conference performance lists over the weekend, New Mexico’s Brodie Young and Tianna Holmes were honored with weekly recognition announced by the Mountain West Conference on Tuesday.

Young was named the Mountain West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week and the Men’s Freshman of the Week, while Holmes was selected as the mountain West Women’s Track Athlete of the Week. “For Brodie to be leading the conference in an event that has had multiple national finalists in the 400 is quite an honor for him. It shows he has been working extremely hard,” said UNM head coach Joe Franklin. “Tianna is on a very similar trajectory now to having her best ever season in her final year.”

Young leaped to the top of the Mountain West performance list in the 400-meters, breaking the 46-second barrier for the first time in his life on Saturday in California. Young crossed the line in 45.92 seconds, topping a field of 18 competitors at the Fresno State Invitational. Jevon O’Bryant followed close behind Young, clocking in at 46.19 seconds to finish second in the event. O’Bryant improved upon his previous season-best time of 46.53 seconds, moving up to No. 3 on the Mountain West performance list with his time on Saturday.

Holmes jumped to the top of the Mountain West performance list in the 200-meters, clocking in at 23.27 seconds on Saturday at the Fresno State Invitational to top a field of 46 runners. The school record holder in the event, Holmes was just 0.15 seconds away from the Lobos’ all-time top mark. Holmes also led the Lobos in the 400-meters, running to a time of 53.27 seconds at the Fresno State Invitational on Saturday. That was an improvement of 0.02 seconds upon her Mountain West-leading time entering the weekend.

This is the fifth weekly award of the year for Young, who has been named athlete of the week twice and freshman of the week three times. It is the first weekly award of the year for Holmes, and this week’s honors upped the Lobos’ total count for the 2022-23 year to 22 Mountain West Athlete of the Week honors.

The Lobos are off this weekend, as they prepare for the 2023 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The three-day event is set for May 10-12 at Fresno State, and it kicks off the championship portion of UNM’s schedule.
