Lobos Earn Second Place Finish at Mountain West Championship

TUCSON, Ariz. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team earned a runner-up finish at the 2023 Mountain West Championship as play concluded Sunday at OMNI Tucson National. The Lobos shot 12-under during the final round to finish in second place at 35-under.

San Diego State won the title with a score of 60-under. The Lobos were second, edging UNLV by one shot for second place as the Rebels finished at 34-under. Colorado State was fourth at 29-under.

Two Lobos finished in the individual top 10 at the event. Albert Boneta finished eighth at 11-under after a final round 70. Bastien Amat was ninth at 10-under after shooting 67 on Sunday, the low round of the day for UNM. Carson Herron posted a final round 68 to finish the event at 6-under, while Matthew Watkins shot 71 on Sunday. Brandon Shong rounded out the lineup with an even par 72 in the final round.

“The guys played well again today,” said head coach Glen Millican. “To shoot 35-under means we played good golf all week. It is a result that hopefully gives us some momentum as we head into the NCAAs.”

The Lobos will now await the announcements of the NCAA Regional fields. The selections for the NCAA Regionals will be on Wednesday, May 3 at 11 am MT on Golf Channel with play at the six regional sites held May 15-17. The top five finishers at each regional will advance to the finals, held May 26-31 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
