TUCSON, Ariz. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team opened play Friday at the 2023 Mountain West Championship with the first round at OMNI Tucson National. The Lobos shot 10-under during the opening 18 holes to be tied for third place after the opening day.

New Mexico is tied at 10-under with Fresno State, six shots behind San Diego State, who leads at 16-under. UNLV is in second place at 14-under.

All five Lobos shot par or better during Friday’s opening round. Matthew Watkins shot the low round of the day for the Lobos with a 4-under 68. He is T-th on the individual leaderboard. Bastien Amat shot a 3-under 69, Albert Boneta shot a 2-under 70 and Brandon Shong shot a 1-under 71. Carson Herron rounded out the lineup with an even par 72, rallying from four-over at the turn to play the back nine in 4-under.

“Good playing by all five guys today,” said head coach Glen Millican. “We had a little of everything that we need out here during this round. Everyone had a moment or two when they needed to bounce back from a bad hole and all of them did so, That allowed them to take advantage of some good golf and post a good round to start the tournament.”

The Mountain West Championship will continue Saturday and conclude Sunday at OMNI Tucson National.
