Lobos Selected for NCAA San Antonio Regional

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico women’s golf team was selected to participate in the NCAA San Antonio Regional, as the NCAA announced the regional fields on Wednesday. The tournament will be held May 8-10 at TPC San Antonio, home of the Valero Texas Open on the PGA Tour. The Lobos earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Regionals as the Mountain West Champion.

The Lobos are making their 24th NCAA Regional appearance since the format was adopted in 1993, having advanced to the NCAA Championships in nine of those years. UNM finished 15th in the 2021 Columbus Regional in their last appearance as a team. Last season, Jenny Lertsadwattana and Lauren Lehigh competed as individuals as New Mexico hosted the Albuquerque Regional. New Mexico last advanced to the NCAA Championships in 2010, their 15th overall NCAA Championship appearance.

The 12 teams competing in the San Antonio Regional are Texas A&M, Auburn, Pepperdine, Oklahoma State, SMU, UCLA, New Mexico, Denver, Illinois, Sam Houston, Louisiana-Monroe and Missouri State. The top five teams at the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, held May 19-24 in Scottsdale, Ariz. The top individual (not on advancing teams) will also advance to the NCAA Championships.

“I was thinking that San Antonio was a possibility, but we rarely get selected to the site that is closest,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “We know we can compete with all those teams. We have been paired with Texas A&M before. Now the focus isn’t on making it to regionals, but competing there at our highest level and giving us the best chance to advance. We have played well this spring, highlighted by last week at the Mountain West Championship, and we are excited to head to San Antonio and show what we can do.”

The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio opened in 2010 and has hosted the PGA Tour’s Valero Texas Open since that year. This year marks the first time the course has hosted a NCAA Regional.
