COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –– Arda Azkara picked up his fourth Mountain West Player of the Week honor of the season, his second consecutive, after helping the Lobos clinch the Mountain West regular season title. It’s his fifth career honor, and no other Mountain West player has earned the honor more than twice this season.
Azkara went 4-0 for the week, 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles as New Mexico posted home wins over San Diego State and UNLV to complete an unbeaten Mountain West regular season.
Against San Diego State, he won at No. 1 doubles 6-2 to clinch the first half of the doubles point, and then won 6-2, 6-4 to make the score 3-0 as UNM clinched the regular season Mountain West title. Against UNLV he won at No. 1 doubles 6-0 and then made the score 2-1 with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles.
The wins made Azkara a perfect 11-0 in MW play this year. He went 6-0 at No. 1 singles and 5-0 in No. 1 doubles. Additionally, he remained unbeaten in his career at home at No. 1 singles over his two seasons at UNM.
