by Frank Mercogliano

FORT COLLINS, COLO. — No. 75 Wyoming won the outright Mountain West regular season title with a 4-0 victory over New Mexico in the final regular season match for both teams.  The Lobos finished tied for ninth in the league at 10-9 and 3-7 in the league, tying with Fresno State, but UNM will earn the No. 9 seed based on the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Lobos will now head to the conference tournament starting on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Pacific/11 a.m. Mountain against either Colorado State, Boise State, Nevada or San Jose State, whichever team finishes last among those four teams (Colorado State plays later on Saturday and win a win over Air Force would earn the No. 5 seed and a bye).

The Cowgirls, ranked No. 75, swept doubles with a pair of 6-1 wins at Nos. 2 and 3, and then with just four indoor courts, swept the first three singles matches for the 4-0 win.  Sophie Zehander won 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 over Sarah O’Connor to clinch the win.  Katherine Jhang of UNM also lost a three-setter, losing 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to Maria Oreshkina and Maud Vandeputte lost 6-2, 6-3 to Violetta Borodina.
