PHOENIX, Ariz. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team concluded play in their regular season finale on Saturday with the final round of the Thunderbird Collegiate at the Papago Golf Course. The Lobos shot 2-under in the third round to finish the event in 12th place at 12-over.

Matthew Watkins capped a strong outing with a 4-under final round 67 on Saturday. He finished the event at 6-under, posting his second top-10 finish of the season at T-7th. Brandon Shong shot even par 71 in the final round, while Carson Herron and Albert Boneta each shot a 1-over 72 in the final round. Bastien Amat rounded out the lineup with a third round 73.

“I was happy with the way we played today to finish the event,” said head coach Glen Millican. “Even after the poor play yesterday afternoon, it was still important to compete in the final round and make the most out of the situation we put ourselves in. It was an opportunity to show composure and they did a very good job of that. Matthew had another very good week. Shooting one of the low rounds of the day to lead us to our best round of the tournament was impressive.”

Host Arizona State, ranked fifth nationally, won the event at 28-under, edging No. 19 Arizona by one shot. Second-ranked North Carolina was third at 20-under, while No. 21 Oklahoma State was fourth at 17-under.

The Lobos return to action Apr. 28-30 with the Mountain West Championship, held at OMNI Tucson National.
