PHOENIX, Ariz. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team began play in their regular season finale on Friday with the opening two rounds of the Thunderbird Collegiate at the Papago Golf Course. The Lobos shot 14-under over the first 36 holes of the event to finish the day in 12th place.

After shooting 4-over in the morning’s first round, the Lobos shot 10-over in the second round. Host Arizona State, ranked fifth nationally, is the 36-hole leader at 23-under. No. 19 Arizona is second at 22-under, while No. 2 North Carolina and No. 21 Oklahoma State are tied for third at 14-under.

Matthew Watkins led the Lobos on the opening day of the tournament, shooting rounds of 68 and 72 to finish the day T-17th on the individual leaderboard at 2-under. Bastien Amat is at 3-over through 36 holes, while Carson Herron and Albert Boneta are both at 7-over. Brandon Shong rounds out the lineup at 9-over. Virgilio Paz, playing as an individual, is at 3-over.

The Thunderbird Collegiate will conclude Saturday with the final round at the Papago Golf Club.
